OUR ASPIRATION
The LTA was established in 2019 to drive forward the University’s ambition to be Pioneering in Education and to realise the Inspiring Learning vision of the Learning and Teaching Strategy 2019-2025. Our work is framed by a commitment to building a global community in which excellence in teaching and inspiring learning is recognised, celebrated, shared and applied.
The Learning and Teaching Academy supports this by:
• Delivering a portfolio of development opportunities for colleagues engaged in learning and teaching,
• Opening creative space for exploring and developing innovative approaches to learning and teaching,
• Providing a focal point for celebrating the inspiring teaching that ourishes across the Heriot- Watt community,
• Offering specialist input to learning and teaching developments across the University,
• Facilitating strategically-aligned pedagogic research, scholarship and evaluation.
OUR APPROACH
The LTA works to promote excellence in teaching and inspire learning through:
DEVELOPING PRACTICE
The LTA supports new and more established colleagues to develop and enhance their skills in teaching and inspiring learning. This includes practical support for those new to teaching
as well as Masterclasses and leadership development opportunities for those looking to share and extend their practice.
EVIDENCE-BASED ENHANCEMENT
The LTA opens spaces for creative engagement with learning and teaching practice, including the sharing of experience across disciplines, campuses and University contexts. This includes engagement with national and global learning and teaching initiatives. The LTA actively supports the scholarship of teaching and learning and champions innovation in pedagogy. This approach is underpinned by a commitment to evidenced-based enhancement – taking deliberate steps to transform learning and teaching and critically evaluating the impact of our efforts.
CELEBRATING AND REWARDING EXCELLENCE IN LEARNING AND TEACHING
The LTA ensures that excellence in teaching is recognised, celebrated and ampli ed across the University and beyond. From showcasing inspiring practice in our events and publications through to the recognition
of achievements in our Teaching Excellence Awards, we give visibility to the efforts of colleagues across the University. We also support pathways to professional recognition, and encourage and support staff to attain the appropriate level of Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
